Audio recording of Ericka Hall’s presentation “Copy is Interface”

Excellent! It’s wonderful that the presentation audio is also available.

Copy Is Interface - Future of Web Apps, Oct 2007

Presentation by Erika Hall of Mule Design on the importance of thoughtfully designed interface copy. Plenty of examples of best (and worst) practices.

Finding the primary pivot

“The primary mode of navigation on Chowhound… is the discussion thread. The elements of the interface are all organized around the idea that the topic of discussion is the most important thing. Therefore, the features tend to be those that support it.”

Surface

A few demo/concept videos of Microsoft’s new tabletop computing user interface. Between this, Jeff Han’s work at Perceptive Pixel and the iPhone, it looks like gestural UI conventions could be codified pretty quickly.

User-centered Design for Evolving Products (PDF)

Talk by Ryan Freitas on design methods for rapidly evolving products. Advocates for creation of a clear value statement, using storytelling to understand user motivations/expectations, focusing on core product features, exercising thoughtful restraint.

User Experience Quotes

Quite a collection of User Experience Design quotes…

Google Website Optimizer

Google’s new tool to help websites improve goal completion rates by running A/B type tests.

Joost Self-invite

Instant invite for the Joost beta. Some interesting concepts and user interface things happening in Joost. In particular the chat/widgets functionality seems promising. Program highlights so far: Aardman Animations, bunch of National Geographic/travel.

nastuh | visual effects artist

Visual effects portfolio with an amazingly effective interface. As the reel plays you can move a “spotlight” over the frame to get a glimpse of the pre-production footage under the finished film. Click on the frame and pre/post footage plays side by side.

NeoKeys - A New Mobile User Interface

Shifts the on-screen menu structure onto the keypad by placing LCD screens above each row. I like how the concept makes currently available functionality more visible, but am not convinced it’s better overall. Text input is particularly modal/cumbersome.

Jared Spool and UIE test the three-click rule

“Users weren’t any more satisfied with shorter clickstreams than they were with longer clickstreams. The satisfaction of users doesn’t depend on the number of clicks.”

Bill Buxton on multi-touch systems

Buxton’s thoughts on the unique opportunities (and limitations) of multi-touch systems as well as a history leading up to the present.

Processing audiovisual piece, multi-touch interface - flight404.com

Cool Processing driven audiovisual piece by Robert of flight404.com. He’s controlling aspects of the visualization to “compose” to the music live through a LEMUR multi-touch interface. Check out the video.

Designing Interactions - Bill Moggridge

Wow, this looks like it’s going to be excellent. “Bill Moggridge introduces us to forty influential designers who have shaped our interaction with technology.” Interesting “living history” element to this project - the book includes video interviews.

Iwata Asks! The Reasoning Behind Wii

“This is a somewhat peculiar experiment. Nevertheless, by talking face-to-face with the developers, I wish to record for posterity the course that led to the creation of Wii, and the background behind its development.”

App After App, or A zoology of next year’s web applications

A presentation by Matt Webb of interconnected.org on the types of web apps we may be seeing in the near future.

Shapeshifters ยป Twisted hard drive

Cool physical computing project from Ivrea. External hard drive represents how out-of-sync it is with the host PC by altering its shape. Give the cube a twist to start the sync process. Pretty elegant idea.

Articles - UIE Roadshow (User Interface Engineering)

From the UIE workshop Tom attended.

Interface Design in Seven Weeks

Article by Marc Rettig about a quick interface design course he taught for the Illinois Institute of Technology. Neat walkthrough of the class projects and the interface prototypes students came up with.

Yahoo! User Interface Blog

New Yahoo! UI blog started up to coincide with the sharing of the Yahoo’s Design Pattern Library and User Interface Library under a Creative Commons and BSD license. Very cool.

Prototype Japanese phones with a regular screen for display and a touch sensitive display for input.

Great idea. Allows “keypad” to be context specific - offering only the functionality needed at that time, drastically simpler. Less buttons, less reliance on the ubiquitous two “soft keys”. Developed by NTT DoCoMo / Mitsubishi.

The address book desk - elastic space (Timo Arnall)

Timo’s rfid enabled desk. Each space corresponds with an action for his Nokia 3229 (near-field enabled.) Interesting discussion about “negative space” - the safe place where one can feel comfortable an action WON’T happen!

The human factor: revolutionizing the way people live with technology - Kim Vicente.

Photo Router

“We believe there’s an opportunity to improve the process of transferring photos captured on cameraphones to other devices. The current applications and processes for sending, archiving, and printing digital photos are simply too complex.” Thesis project
